And though popular lore has often claimed the cheerleaders were inspired by the stripper Bubbles Cash-a colorful character whose sassy walk down the steps of the Cotton Bowl in 1967 is the stuff of legend-I’m not sure that’s the answer, either. What we found was a different origin tale. To quote a 1984 history of the Cowboys: “The Cheerleaders began as the creation of one man: Texas E. Cowboys general manager Tex Schramm, a visionary who helped start instant replay (among other innovations), is generally credited with bringing sexy sideline dancers to the NFL. It has to do with who first sketched it, a question that also leads us to investigate who is responsible for the squad in the first place. And in 2018, the uniform entered the halls of American history: It’s now housed in the Smithsonian.īut there is a mystery behind that uniform, one that the Cowboys would very much like to ignore. Introduced in 1972 to much ballyhoo, the uniform kicked off a trend across professional sports for bare midriffs and fulsome cleavage. “Iconic” is the word used most often, though skimpy might be a runner-up. It would be hard to put a price tag on the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader uniform.
